III. DEFINING OBJECTIVES AND GOALS

Objectives and goals form the backbone of the program scope statement. Objectives funnel down the program vision into smaller, attainable, and measurable tasks that when accomplished, align towards the achievement of the program’s goal.

For example, if the project’s vision is to improve the organization’s digital presence, an objective could be to ‘Increase website traffic by 30% in the next quarter’, while the corresponding goal is ‘Improve online customer engagement’.

IV. CONSIDERING INFLUENCES AND VARIABLES

The program scope statement also needs to account for both internal and external variables that could influence the program’s outcome.

Internal variables might include resource availability, stakeholder support, organizational culture, and technologies.

External variables, on the other hand, could encompass market trends, competitors’ activities, economic conditions and regulatory environment among others. For instance, in our digital presence transformation example, a change in data privacy regulations might impact your program’s web development and data management strategies.

To summarize, creating a detailed program scope statement involves intertwining all four components: vision, objectives, goals, and influences/variables.
